Oedema

DESCRIPTION

Oedema is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the body tissues or body cavities, causing swelling or distention of the affected parts. Oedema of the ankles and lower legs is characteristic of congestive heart failure but it can accompany many other conditions, including Obesity, diseased leg veins, kidney problems, Cirrhosis of the liver, Anaemia and severe malnutrition.

The accumulation of fluid within the lungs is a serious complication of cardiac failure, pneumonia and other disorders. Since oedema is a symptom, the underlying cause must be treated because this condition is often life-threatening.
