Tinnitus is a sensation of noise (ringing, buzzing, roaring, whistling or hissing sound) in the ears. It may often be from wax in the ear or a perforated tympanic membrane, and can usually be heard only by the one affected.
It is an extremely common condition in adults, particularly in the elderly. It may be constant or intermittent, and may be worse before, after, or during an attack of vertigo. Treatment of tinnitus is directed toward the underlying symptoms.
