Sciatica

DESCRIPTION

Sciatica refers to severe Pain in the leg along the sciatic nerve and its branches. It may be caused by injury or pressure to the base of the nerve in the lower back, or by a metabolic, toxic, or infectious disease.

There is a characteristic, sharp, radiating pain felt across the buttocks and at the back of the thigh and may branch out through the lower body and legs. The nerve becomes inflamed due to compression and in chronic conditions. The muscles of the lower leg eventually atrophy.

Treatment is for the underlying condition. Measures for the relief of pain include bed rest, immobilization of the leg, application of heat, and sedation.
