Osteoporosis (porous bone) is a condition characterised by decreased density and enlargement of bone spaces. This produces bone fragility, where if an individual falls, they can break a leg, hip, shoulder or arm. There are now some fifteen million sufferers, mostly elderly women.
For treatment of this condition, Calcium supplementation should be a preventative measure. However, osteoporosis involves the total bone matrix of Calcium plus Vitamin D, Phosphorus and trace minerals. Research indicates that weight-bearing exercises are also important for sufferers of this condition in order for bones to maintain strength.
